2 Wheelin’ in a Segway

I used to get dizzy and toss my cookies in carnival rides resembling the prototype 2-seater Segway. Even as a thick-headed 10 year old I wised up fast. I distinctly recall the “Saucer” carnival ride as my nemesis. And who designed the “Salt and Pepper?” Some evil ride developer must’ve loved the thought of kids gacking their cotton candy turning at 30mph in tight circles. From then on, I got my jollies on old roller coasters and bumper cars.

Now, in a joint venture with General Motors, Segway has developed a prototype all-electric ride they label the PUMA (Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility) for buzzing around the city. Topping out at 35mph, the first generation 2-wheeler can go for a max of 35 miles, then the lithium ion battery has to be recharged. I’m intrigued, as I’ve considered a bicycle (my first was stolen), a Vespa, and running shoes as ways to get around Brooklyn. This first generation PUMA is apparently quite small, a tight fit for anyone over 5 ft., and in rain and snow you might have to wear a rubber suit. Not exactly a 4 seasons vehicle yet. The GM/Segway team says we’re 2 generations and a few years away from the first sale. Would it be asking to much if it could be folded and stored in my closet?
