The Video Download Heavyweight Championship: Apple vs. Everybody Else

Just last week a consortium of 20 leading companies, heavyweights like Sony, Microsoft, Fox Entertainment, NBC Universal, Paramount, Toshiba and so on, announced what they’re calling a new digital media framework to allow consumers to acquire and play content on a wide range of devices. This Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE) will create a simple, uniform digital media experience where content can be played on multiple devices from a multiple services.

Basically they’re banding together to fight Apple’s I-Tunes service, which dominates the music frontier. Next up, the insatiable Steve Jobs has in his sights the video download market. He’s got a head start. Go through iTunes as we speak. There’s a whole lotta video goin’ on already.

It’s all about the almighty dollar. Everybody wants a piece of the video download pie, and make no mistake, those pieces will be impressive chunks of change. Whatever the range of content, it’ll be available for download from more sites, issued under one industry-wide digital specification. Given this specification, hardware and software manufacturers will construct devices that create a unique user experience and, yes, as you’ve guessed, compete with the iPod. So iPod, iTunes, prepare for battle.

The iPod has totally defined the new world music collection and playback experience. Competitors haven’t done much to distinguish their own portable devices. Frankly, I haven’t blinked an eye at their miserable attempts to compete with Apple. We’ll see what this consortium produces. My iPod experience has generally been a good one. That’ll be a whole other blog entry, perhaps, to wave the iPod flag as well as rip it a new one for it’s malfunctions.
