While most courses are limited to teaching basic fundamentals, this 3 day intensive course equips you with the knowledge and hands-on skills to go out with confidence and create your own documentary pieces.

The course begins with classroom work that prepares you to handle a variety of situations in the field, focusing on:

  • HD workflow
  • Light techniques
  • Audio
  • Basic editing on FCP
  • Interview techniques
  • Creative Style
  • Professional etiquette


Students go out and direct, shoot, and edit their own 60-second documentaries in a real-life setting using the latest Canon HD cameras and Final Cut Pro for a public showing on the final day of the course.

Summary Outline:

DAY 1
The Creative Process; Working with a camera; Canon cameras; Composition; Covering the scene (Principles of coverage); On Set Etiquette Workshop; Shooting, lighting and sound recording techniques

DAY 2
The Screenings: sample projects, commercials, interviews with B-roll. Preparation; Story development; Plan out shoot; Storyboard; Shot list; Equipment list; Release forms; Cast; Crew up & Shoot, Fieldwork Assignment

DAY 3
Introduction to Final Cut Pro Editing and Basic Titling, Edit of one minute films, Debriefing: Final Q&A; Discussion of careers; Technology Public Screening of Final projects & Wrap up party
